Birds flying high you know how I feel Sun in the sky you know how I feel Breeze driftin' on by you know how I feel
It's a new dawn It's a new day It's a new life for me yeah
It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life for me Ouh And I'm feeling good.... -An excerpt from the song Feeling Good by Nina Simone
This summer (2020) I learned quite a bit about the talented Ms. Nina Simone born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in Tryon, North Carolina (1933-2003). Nina Simone would go on to be considered one of the most gifted and multi-talented African-American vocalists and pianists of her generation.
Unlike summertimes of past, there was no distance traveling for us due to the pandemic caused by Coronavirus. Visiting with family and friends has come with new rules as many of us continue to live and adjust to wearing masks, washing our hands more often and social distancing.
There were some days where one day road trips took place as the camera lens opened and closed capturing various photos on the wide opened roads.
Summer walks, bicycle rides, notes to self offering encouragement, tractors, hay, cumulus clouds, horses gazing in pastures, bountiful trees were captured in photography.
This summer there was much delight sitting on rocks, clinging to trees while hiking at Hanging Rock State Park.
Throughout the days, I have enjoyed watching shows and movies through our new Firestick. I have discovered many interesting series, documentaries and movies including What Happened, Miss Simone?, Self Made Inspired By The Life of Madam C.J. Walker, Hamilton, Blood and Water, The Lion King, Black Is King, The Last O.G. and Doctor Foster just to name a few. These shows have assisted in my staying entertained during this summer pandemic.
There are many other things I have done this summer including baking, bicycle riding, hiking, taking local road trips, sipping on ice cold beverages and now preparing to return to work. I have felt a sense of stability incorporating various activities into my daily routine.
Recently I was feeling good. One afternoon I stopped at the Rose Garden and recorded a few short videos. Later on, the song, Feeling Good, sung by Ms. Nina Simone was added to the background.
As the ending days of summertime are now close at hand, may we be reminded of the possibilities. There is hope in feeling good as Ms. Nina Simone sang. May we all have joy, health and peace at the rising and going down of the sun of each new day.
Take care of yourself,
